It does have two sub-holes that let you go down to A3 - they do the job OK, but not brilliantly. There are a few noteworthy points about it. The standard range for an Alto C is A3 to F5. For a beginner, this should pose no problem, as you will struggle to play clean notes that high up the range anyway.
