The ring is a Paxman 'M' fitting, and being slightly more generous in shape than the standard M flare, it gives a slighly bigger sound. Making a flare from a sheet of brass joined with a seam gives a more even wall thickness, throat to rim, than is the case with a flare spun from a disk.
