Séourouba drum

£47.50

A middle-range (Kutirbas) peg drum from Casamance region of Senegal, purchased there in 2004 with intention to play it, but spent its life as an ornament. It's played mainly by Jola and Mandinka people. It has a carved wooden body (360mm high), a goat-skin head (210mm diameter) and a rope and peg system for fine-tuning. It's either held between the knees or slung and played with one bare hand and one stick, using a similar technique to that for the sabar.
