This is a coil split switch with a difference. An ordinary coil split switch allows you to go from the full humbucker, for a fatter tone, to one coil by itself, for a brighter, single coil-like tone. This switch allows you to select between one coil, the full humbucker, and the other coil. Some humbuckers are voiced differently on each coil, so with this switch you can get three distinct tones.
